I also didn't read it that way, to me it sounded like he is tan, either because he was brown (as in, the skin color Indians, Arabians etc. would have), or because he simply has a darker complection. But from what I remember, people have told me that they understood he was black from the books. So now I am again unsure.

You're welcome! I don't have it either, and then I first read it as PDF in English, and later in my native language. In any case all I remember for sure is that his complection was described as 'bronze'.
