Divergent (book)

Hello guys! I read the first book in the Divergent series at the request of a friend, and I loved it! I tried to read the second, but I got bored and quit 😏😏😏. Anyways, I will probably finish the series soon, but I just wanted to to say hiiiii!!!!!!!

So… Death has 5 letters. And 5 is between 4 and 6. Let that sink in…

I know this is a weird concept but this is the only idea I have because I posted this a few years ago and wanted to update it...

Abnegation - No Gum - Too selfish to indulge in something. (If they had to have gum, it would probably be unflavored.)

Amity - Every Fruit Flavor (Natural) - They are always sweet and full of flavor. Plus in Amity they grow fruit, and their gum would be made of their crops.

Candor - Any flavor they want - The Candor doesn't care what others think and will chew whatever they like best. (It was hard to think of something, so if you have any other ideas, please comment.)

Dauntless - Cinnamon - (One of my favorite flavors) It's a strong and powerful flavor, kind of like the Dauntless. It's spicy which I feel like Dauntless would try to see how much they could chew at a time as a dare.

Erudite - Mint - Research shows that chewing mint flavored gum increases attention and cognitive performance.

Divergent - Bubble Gum - Apparently bubble gum is a mix of many flavors and Divergents are a mix of factions.

The American chapter

I have a mirror in my house. It is located behind the sliding wall in the elevator. the second Monday of the third month; The day he cut me off. Our Team stood before me.

I sat on a chair and my mother stood behind me with a knife. The roots fall to the ground in yellow gills.

When he was done, I pushed my hair behind my face and tied it into a bun. I noticed how calm and stable he was. Well practiced in the art of self-destruction. I can't say the same about me.

If he wasn’t interested, curiosity would run amok. A lot can happen to your face in three months. he thought of the broad face with the big round eyes and the long, thin nose. She still looks like a little girl, but in the last few months I've stopped being 16. Other groups don't celebrate birthdays. It must be clever.

"Here," he said, trying knots. His look in the mirror caught my attention. It was too late to move, but instead of accepting us, he smiled at our suggestion. The eyes are crying. Why don't you know me?

"So today is the day," he said.

- Yes, I replied.

- Are you scared?

I looked into his eyes. Today we can find out which of the five groups we belong to. In tomorrow's election, I will choose the team I will choose for the rest of my life. I try to stay away from my family.

"I said no. The evidence shouldn't change our decision."

"Common." "Breakfast," he smiled.

- thank you very much. To cut my hair.

He kissed my cheek and pushed the board to the side of the mirror. I think my mom might be beautiful in another world. Her body was pale beneath the black dress. He has a high build and long eyelashes, and when he lets his hair down at night, the wind falls on his shoulders. But beauty must be hidden in denial.

THERE IS ONE mirror in my house. It is behind a sliding panel in the hallway upstairs. Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my father cuts my hair.

I sit on the stool and my father stands behind me with the scissors, trimming. The strands fall on the floor in a dull, blond ring.

When he finishes, he pulls my hair away from my face and puts a comb back. I note how calm he looks and how focused he is. He is well-practiced in the art of losing herself. I can’t say the same of myself.

I sneak a look at my reflection when he isn’t paying attention—not for the sake of vanity, but out of curiosity. A lot can happen to a person’s appearance in three months. In my reflection, I see a narrow face, wide, round eyes, and a long, thin nose—I look older than I did before, as in the last few months I turned sixteen. The other factions celebrate birthdays, but we don’t. It would be self-indulgent.

”There,” he says when he brushes my hair back. Like all the other males in Abnegation, my hair is cut short. His eyes catch mine in the mirror. It is too late to look away, but instead of scolding me, he smiles at my reflection. I frown a little. Why doesn’t he reprimand me for staring at myself?

So today is the day,” he says.

“Yes,” I reply.“

Are you nervous?”

I stare into my own eyes for a moment. Today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in. And tomorrow, at the Choosing Ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them.

“No,” I say. “The tests don’t have to change our choices.”

“Right.” He smiles.

“Let’s go eat breakfast.”

“Thank you. For cutting my hair.”

He pats my shoulder and slides the panel over the mirror. My father looks impeccably similar to me, with short blonde hair in Abnegation style. He has high cheekbones, and the same long eyelashes as I do.

We walk together to the kitchen. On these mornings when my sister makes breakfast, and my mother’s hand skims my hair as she reads the newspaper, and my father smiles as he clears the table- it is on these mornings that I feel guiltiest for wanting to leave them.

The bus stinks of exhaust. Every time it hits a patch of uneven pavement, it jostles me from side to side, even though I’m gripping the seat to keep myself still.

My older sister, Cayla, stands in the aisle, holding a railing above her head to keep herself steady. We don’t look alike. She has my mother’s dark hair and hooked nose and my father’s green eyes and dimpled cheeks.

She also inherited my father’s talent for selflessness. She gave his seat to a surly Candor woman on the bus without a second thought.

The Candor woman wears a black buttoned up shirt with white dress pants—Candor standard uniform. Their faction values honesty and sees the truth as black and white, so that is what they wear.

The gaps between the buildings narrow and the roads are smoother as we near the heart of the city. The building that was once called the Sears Tower—we call it the Hub—emerges from the fog, a black pillar in the skyline. The bus passes under the elevated tracks. I have never been on a train, though they never stop running and there are tracks everywhere. Only the Dauntless ride them.

Five years ago, volunteer construction workers from Abnegation repaved some of the roads. They started in the middle of the city and worked their way outward until they ran out of materials. The roads where I live are still cracked and patchy, and it’s not safe to drive on them. We don’t have a car anyway.

Cayla’s expression is placid as the bus sways and jolts on the road. The gray robe falls from her arm as she clutches a pole for balance. I can tell by the constant shift of her eyes that she is watching the people around us—striving to see only them and to forget himself. Candor values honesty, but our faction, Abnegation, values selflessness.

The bus stops in front of the school and I get up, scooting past the Candor woman. I grab on to the railing as I bump into the woman. My slacks are too long, and I’ve never been that graceful.

The Upper Levels building is the oldest of the three schools in the city: Lower Levels, Mid-Levels, and Upper Levels. Like all the other buildings around it, it is made of glass and steel. In front of it is a large metal sculpture that the Dauntless climb after school, daring each other to go higher and higher. Last year I watched one of them fall and break her leg. I was the one who ran to get the nurse.

”Aptitude tests today,” I say. Cayla is not quite a year older than I am, so we are in the same year at school.

She nods as we pass through the front doors. My muscles tighten the second we walk in. The atmosphere feels hungry, like every sixteen-year-old is trying to devour as much as they can get of this last day. It is likely that we will not walk these halls again after the Choosing Ceremony—once we choose, our new factions will be responsible for finishing our education.

Our classes are cut in half today, so we will attend all of them before the aptitude tests, which take place after lunch. My heart rate is already elevated.

“You aren’t at all worried about what they’ll tell you?” I ask Cayla.

We pause at the split in the hallway where she will go one way, toward Advanced Math, and I will go the other, toward Faction History.

She raises an eyebrow at me. “Are you?”

I could tell her I’ve been worried for weeks about what the aptitude test will tell me—Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Amity, or Dauntless?

Instead I smile and say, “Not really.”

She smiles back. “Well…have a good day.”

I walk toward Faction History, chewing on my lower lip. He never answered my question.

The hallways are cramped, though the light coming through the windows creates the illusion of space; they are one of the only places where the factions mix, at our age. Today the crowd has a new kind of energy, a last day mania.

A boy with long curly hair shouts “Hey!” next to my ear, waving at a distant friend. A jacket sleeve smacks me on the cheek. Then an Erudite girl in a blue sweater shoves me. I lose my balance and fall hard on the ground.

“Out of my way, Stiff,” she snaps, and continues down the hallway.

My cheeks warm. I get up and dust myself off. A few people stopped when I fell, but none of them offered to help me. Their eyes follow me to the edge of the hallway. This sort of thing has been happening to others in my faction for months now—the Erudite have been releasing antagonistic reports about Abnegation, and it has begun to affect the way we relate at school. The gray clothes, the plain hairstyle, and the unassuming demeanor of my faction are supposed to make it easier for me to forget myself, and easier for everyone else to forget me too. But now they make me a target.

I pause by a window in the E Wing and wait for the Dauntless to arrive. I do this every morning. At exactly 7:25, the Dauntless prove their bravery by jumping from a moving train.

My mother calls the Dauntless “hellions.” They are pierced, tattooed, and black-clothed. Their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds our city. From what, I don’t know.

They should perplex me. I should wonder what courage—which is the virtue they most value—has to do with a metal ring through your nostril. Instead my eyes cling to them wherever they go.

The train whistle blares, the sound resonating in my chest. The light fixed to the front of the train clicks on and off as the train hurtles past the school, squealing on iron rails. And as the last few cars pass, a mass exodus of young men and women in dark clothing hurl themselves from the moving cars, some dropping and rolling, others stumbling a few steps before regaining their balance. One of the girls wraps her arm around another girl’s shoulders, laughing.

Watching them is a foolish practice. I turn away from the window and press through the crowd to the Faction History classroom.

In this story I am babysitting a little girl (6) and her older brother (about 10) for the sake of the story I will be calling the little girl Mia (not her real name, calm down).

Okay so a few days ago I was babysitting my neighbor's kids while they had an appointment. Mia came up with the idea to jump off of the couch multiple times and it was my job to catch her. If she touched the floor then she got a point and if I caught her than I got a point. (if that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll explain in the comments).

Anyways so she is leaping off HEAD FIRST towards the ground! And Mia is really small for a six year old (kinda looks 4) and SHE IS LIKE DIVING TOWARDS THE FLOOR AND IS TRUSTING ME TO CATCH HER. A few times she almost hit her head on the railing by the stairs and almost fell on the hardwood floor but she kept doing it.

And this whole time I'm think that Mia is a true Dauntless Warrior for trusting to catch her and being brave enough to do this. Am I'm over here catching her thinking about what a proud Dauntless member I am. Like Mia has no fear! I was so proud!

(Not that she knows what Divergent or Dauntless is cause she is too young to see a PG-13 movie or read the books.)

I was on my bed in the dark, watching a tv show. I turned it off cause I got hungry. It was basically pitch black in my room (cause I was too lazy to turn on the light) My 2 dogs were smashing my legs. And another note I had a ton of stuff on my floor.

I got up, managed to jump over my dog (who was getting up) and landed on my floor without hitting anything while screaming DAUNTLESS!!!!!

(It was soooooooooooooo fun! Sorry it was such a random story but I had to share it)

Ok so I have a friend from Hunger Games wiki and she is reading Divergent for the first time. She doesn’t wanna go to the wiki because of spoilers though. She told me to write down her updates and opinions on the book here, so this is her first impression. Strawb has read the first 4 chapters so far.

Strawb’s POV: “I have the first update 4 chapters in. First of all I didn't know it was set in "Chicago" (obviously a futuristic dystopic version) so that's cool. I barely know anything about the factions but I'm already trying to figure out which one I would be in. Also, Dauntless sounds like it's full dumb*ss edgy kids.”

But seriously,

To my mother, who gave me the moment when Beatrice realizes how strong her mother is and wonders how she missed it for so long

What kind of author puts spoiler on the first page? this makes it sooo obvious that Beatrice's mother was gonna die-

I thought that Veronica Roth did a amazing job symbolizing the character trait to the piece of clothing and faction.

Abnegation - They wear grey to stand out less and prefer more functional clothing

Amity - They wear red and yellow to show there bright view on life

Candor - They wear black and white to symbolize the truth as black and white

Dauntless - They wear black to show their fearsome lifestyle of battling as well as have tattoos and piercing's

Erudite - They wear blue because it is calming and stimulates the brain

So I don't like the Four/Tobias from the film

This is nothing about the acting they did

Like I did not like Theo James as Four

I did not imagine him like that

So here is my unpopular opinion, I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying this but...

Christina is annoying.

I just didn't like her in the series, to me she was more of a annoying then funny person. Im ok with Movie Christina because she is kind of different then in the books. But There Is just something about book Christina that I dont like and I think is annoying.
