I js finished reading the last book, Allegiant, and it said Christina and Four were arguementative besties, when did it say they were dating? It also nearly made me cry when Four was like 'Tris is gone boohoo' yet I was annoyed when Tris died cuz its like, girl, you survived death serum, and you get shot 3 times and die, like what? HOW DARE U DIE TOT

Im dauntless and i started the books yesterday and i js finished them and i cried a bunch. I go by she/her but idgaf what anyone calls me. I’m also a swiftie and reading is my favorite thing in the world. my favorite book series of all time is percy jackson and the olympians and my favorite book series rn is this :) (my fav Taylor album is folklore)

apocalypse would destroy society and structure

but who in their right mind would decide to make a whole new government system over it instead of trying to reconstruct society the way it was before

I always thought of Marcus as an abusive, moody man and a TERRIBLE Abnegation but my mom thinks differently. Yes, maybe he could pull himself together temporarily but that makes him no less abusive and strict. By the way, which faction do you think Marcus belongs in? I think he would make a good Dauntless if he learns the discipline part.

I notice the most understood villain of all time is now marked by hateful feelings and described as "without a conscience." I believe she deserved a second chance to live, she was completely helpless in dying, with a bullet-wounded leg slumped on the floor. Tris's mission in Insurgent all depended on Jeanine's survival, why did she have to die? Veronica Roth most likely created this defeat (using the universal law of storytelling) to make the ending more satisfying, but honestly the new villain, Evelyn (as a character) could never measure up to Jeanine. She was the original villain. Please comment if you appreciate Jeanine as much as I do. She is the reason for Divergent and the entire plot of Insurgent. Imagine how boring it would be for Divergent to be without her! If you are a moralist, I apologize for my passionate Candor. (Candor would be my next choice to Dauntless and Erudite.)

Okay, so on another platform I said “<4” as a joke, hoping someone would get it and instead I got “what do you mean, less than 4?”

I wanted a text instead of a poll so that we don't have to choose only one, and because it feels more inviting to comment in further detail (of course, you don't have to write long explanations if you don't want to). You can still choose a favorite if you have one. I was curious about people's tastes regarding headquarters.

For me:

Amity: In theory, the nature sounds relaxing and enjoable. Not where I want to live for good, since I'm used to urban environment, but lovely to visit. But in practice, in movies at least, for some reason it looked a bit too closed up to me, maybe because of messy bunches of plants inside glass houses. I guess I'd feel that way about botanical gardens irl too. Also, I'd hate showering only for five minutes with cold water.

Candor: It looks a bit uninteresting to me on the outside, but I love the designs and symbols described inside it. The fact that there are no windows in the main room is more problematic for me because it sounds kind of depressing than it is physically, unlike many people I'm rarely bothered by the lack of air for some reason.

Abnegation; I'm not sure what their HQ is, so I'll talk about the Hub, since they are in charge there. If you know of another place, do tell. I like its urban look, something I find hard to relate to Abnegation. I like the solemn look of the room for the Ceremony. I'm just sad some people have to take the stairs, but they seem to be okay about it, so...Then, those of us who would choose Abnegation or Dauntless would also have to.

Erudite: I only remember the outside of it from the first film. I find the sci-fi look satisfying, even if the shape is a bit chaotic. I love the structure in front (not sure if it's the one Tris spoke of that exists irl). I also like the inside for similar reasons. I suppose it's neat that they have the leader's picture, it would be in other factions too, except that it can grow into a personality cult like it did. Same goes for the slogan displayed. I do wish they used books too and not just computers.

Dauntless: I like the blue lights and the dark style (although there might be too little sunlight). But, there are quite a few problems (probably in other HQ's too, but we know about this the most): everyone sleeping in the same room, using toilets together- and their state, how one can die simply by tripping up (I'm surprised readers don't address this). I would like seeing the Chasm.

All in all, I'd probably choose Candor's since it's basically the most similar to what I already have and like- urban style that's not too overboard.

So I am taking other YA books and thinking of one thing they and Divergent have in common, and then dissecting the differences.

• The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Similarity- Separation. Each trilogy has a separation among the population that fans enjoy discussing.

Divergent- Five factions based on personality

THG- Twelve districts based on geographical location and career

• Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Similarity- Training. The first book of each trilogy is centered around the protagonists' training for their new way of life.

Divergent- Initiation is for every single 16-year-old, for their faction of choice

AoaS- Apprenticeship is for a select few 17-18-year-olds, for becoming a Scythe

• The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Similarity- Age Gap. The protagonist falls in love with a guy with whom there is a significant age gap.

Divergent- She's 16, and he's 18

Twilight- She's 17, and he's 100+

• The Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner

Similarity- Organization. Each trilogy's antagonist is an organization trying to fix the world

Divergent- The Bureau of Genetic Welfare attempts to fix people's personalities by altering them genetically.

TMR- WICKED attempts to cure the Flare, a disease ravaging the world.

• The Pathfinder trilogy by Orson Scott Card (more obscure but it's my favorite)

Similarity- Genetics. Each trilogy deals heavily with the genetic modification of humans.

Divergent- genes are altered to fix personality

Pathfinder- genes are altered to create [REMOVED FOR SPOILERS]

• Renegades trilogy by Marissa Meyer

Similarity- Serums. Both trilogies have serums

Divergent- the various faction-themed serums

Renegades- Agent N

• The Giver by Lois Lowry (suggested by Lem)

Similarity- Conformity. There is a norm that decides everything you do and breaking away from that can be dangerous.
